Last week we expanded on the concept of literature having a main idea.  We have continued working with strategies that help us identify the main idea and locate details that support it.  We also learned about a plot and spent a great deal of time mapping or sequenciing these events.

In Writing, we began writing conferences.  With this, the students help each other expand and build upon their prior thoughts to produce a more detailed story.

Our observations in Science this week sure left the students excited!  After learning about all organisms being composed of cells, we used the microscope to take an indepth look at these building blocks.  They can’t wait to use the microscope again throughout the coming weeks.

In social studies we have been examining various aspects of a community. Recently we created a “community quilt” which will soon be displayed in the hallway.  For this, the students chose a location in St. Johns.

Last week we  began learning that all literature has a main idea.  We have been working with strategies that help us identify the main idea and how to locate details that support the main idea.  We also spent a great deal of time mapping or sequencing the events in stories for comprehension.

In Writing, we have been writing small moments or small events within the students’ lives.  We have been focusing on adding details that help our readers paint a picture of our events in their minds.  The ways that students have begun to expand their writings has been incredible.

Last week the students and I took a mini ‘field trip’ around the school grounds to study living things and their characteristics.  The students all enjoyed this activity and were intrigued with the multitude of critters we discovered!

We observed a bee collecting pollen.
